I want to think that the schools see the benefit of mutual support

BUT, it requires everyone to want to work together.

My guess is that the SEC and Big10 are willing to roll the dice and make moves that might hurt college football in the short term (not enough parity with all top teams in 2 conferences) in order to benefit longer term.

If NIL drives all the top players to two conferences then the results on the field should quickly skew even more heavily in their favor. It will create unstoppable momentum and leave everyone else behind financially. Which then leads to an ACC or B12 or P12 crumbling. Then you can just scoop up who you want and expand at your leisure for ever more payout when the tv contract is up again in a few years.

If I didn't care about the sport, the fans, or the other conferences, that's what I would do. And it could all be done in only 5-10 years.
