Errors can be costly


Please don't think that I'm arguing, because errors can lose you a game. It hasn't happened to us yet and maybe we've just been lucky. Making routine plays and getting as close to 21 outs out of 21 opportunities is key, but not the only way to win big games.

Clearly, we don't want to be making errors and yes, we "need to clean those up". Don't blow the Tourney and the playoffs out of proportion though... these are the same "best teams in the country" that we've been playing all year. I'll go back through the NCAA stats, but I'm willing to bet that in most years the team that ends up winning it all in OKC has probably committed a few errors along the way. Yes, pitching wins championships. Routine is key... spectacular defensive plays are so overrated. To-date, we've allowed 16 unearned runs over 42 games, so a little less than 1/2 RPG on average. By comparison, FSU (a supposedly top-tier defensive team) has given up 20 unearned runs in 48 games. IN NO CASE so far, were our unearned runs in any loss equal to or greater than the run differential. Do your best and play to your strengths... In our case, pitching and BATS win games. A particular player who may be statistically at the top of the errors list, may very well have won us some games with her offensive skills. Defense hasn't been perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it hasn't lost us a game. Championships are just games on a bigger stage. Again, aside from not having played Oklahoma, we've played playoff-level opponents all year long.
