Have coached pitchers one on one for over 25 years. Helped develop many college pitchers and three that were lucky enough to pitch in the big leagues, with another headed that way in next 1-2 years. As an instructor, I would feel like I’ve failed my student and his parents if he couldn’t throw 120-160 pitches in a week without injury. But to each his own……..wish your relative luck in his career!

P. S. In Virginia, high school pitchers can throw 100 pitches in a game. At that point, they can finish the hitter and then must be replaced. Then they cannot pitch in another game for four days. That is the rule established by the VA High School League about 4 years ago. Pretty sure they consulted medical experts before laying out those guidelines. In your scenario, the pitcher that throws 70-80 pitches doesn’t pitch again for a week? They don’t do any bullpens between starts?
