I guess you could say that they should pitch better and throw more strikes, which woud lower their pitch count.

Pitchers last as long as they are reasonably effective AND they have not reached their pitch count limit.

Assuming a starter is effective, they usually hit their pitch count limit around the 6th or 7th inning. That's as far as they go. They could last longer if they get fewer strikeouts (which causes a higher pitch count along with walks). Fewer strikeouts could mean that a batter made an out after 1 or 2 pitches.
