Wasn't that done by the previous board?

Again, I'm short on specifics here. But I think there was a recent election and there may have been some turnover on the membership of the board itself. That extension may have been granted by the previous board prior to/effective with the new year and then the majority shifted. Not uncommon at all.

I think the theory that "something happened" is correct. The fact that he was actually terminated instead of resigning leads me to think that it's political in nature.
