"Without cause" probably means something outside of his contract


It's a legal/HR term. Not a literal phrase indicating that he didn't do anything wrong. Just that whatever he did was not defined within in his contract or something that wasn't criminal in nature. Could also mean that they agreed to part ways -- a termination without cause often means that the separation doesn't affect eligibility for benefits such as retirement.
