NASCAR's problem is tinkered too much with a product that didn't need too
much tinkering. First, there was taking away races from historically important tracks to give a race or in some cases an extra race to a track in another region of the country. Then there was a push to add more cookie cutter tracks instead of encouraging more creativity in the designs of new tracks. Next there was a push to make all the drivers more corporate-friendly and less colorful (think Jimmy Spencer). Then comes NASCAR decision to implement the Playoffs because it didn't like Matt Kenseth winning the championship without winning a single race. Finally, the decision to implement segments, which is a common practice at the local tracks, because today's audience has a shorter attention span (I guess).
