If 12 is out then 16 is the only thing that makes sense
With 8 the SEC would only get two teams in at the most. That is no different than the current 4 team setup. So there is no benefit to them as it only helps the other P5 conferences.
But with 16 that could mean 3-4 teams from a single conference make the playoff. That is a huge money carrot for the SEC and the other conferences. It would require some schedule adjustment to maybe remove a regular season game, but I’m sure the money would be worth it.
And with 16, the regular season becomes more interesting. Teams would no longer be out of the hunt after one loss. It would become more NFL like with the wild card hunt.
But in the end it is about money and 16 would bring much more money than just an 8 team playoff (assuming 12 is not happening).
