Don't confuse what actually happens with the design


before even opening the paper, I read: "the time required for successful degree attainment could be influenced by the pathway the student followed as well as by factors, such as stop outs and less than full-time enrollment status"

Looking at the data, almost 25% of those students took 7 or more years...that is not at all by design and that skews the distribution/mean

Something on the order of 25-30% of the students had at least one "stop-out" (period of 4 months or more without being enrolled...i.e., a semester (not summer) off...that is not at all by design

I don't think there's part-time enrollment data, but that's a got to be a significant influencer as well

So, yes, degrees *take* 5 years...but that's not what universities are shooting for...and they're not going to shift eligibility rules because of those statistics. (especially given that I'm sure the data would show that athletes finish their degrees quicker)
