A player wouldn't be compelled to play for 8 years. . .


If a player isn't on scholarship and doesn't want to pay tuition to play they can stop playing. If the player is good enough to get NIL money but not good enough to have a long pro career then I think it would be better for the player and the school if they could play longer.

You allude to my next point in your post, but the overall talent level in college football would increase. Some of the really good QBs would have to go to smaller schools. With 8 years of eligibility theoretically Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, and Bryce Perkins can all still be playing college football -- no way they would all end up at Alabama in this scenario. This would mean better players would be available for schools like VT, JMU, Liberty, ODU, etc.
