If the ACC opts to go with a North/South alignment, then there isn't a
clean way to divide the 14 teams into the 2 divisions because the North would likely have 6 teams and the South would likely have 8 teams assuming the VA-NC border was the dividing line. If the ACC opts to go with an East/West alignment, then you are talking a quasi zipper model.
East: Pitt, L'ville, VT, Wake, UNC, Clemson, and FSU
West: BC, Syracuse, UVA, Duke, NC State, GT, and Miami
It is likely that UNC, Duke, NC State, UVA, maybe VT, and maybe Miami wouldn't go for this approach because too many rivalries are impacted by it. Under the East/West scenario some teams, including VT, will probably want 2 protected cross-division games. If there are 2 protected cross-division games, then that would mean 0 rotating cross-division games in an 8 conference games schedule. If the ACC agrees to 9 conference games, then there would be only 1 rotating cross-division game. If the ACC decides that teams can only have 1 protected cross-division game, then how likely would VT and Miami or UVA be willing to sacrifice a potential Alliance home-home series to ensure the rivalry game continues as an OOC home-home series in years it isn't a conference game? Remember the UNC-Wake OOC home-home series was a one time or once in a blue moon thing and not an annual event.
