Don't think this decision was made for this year, it was made for next year
Personally, reading between the tea leaves, I think the superintendent pushed for this switch so there is no confusion at the start of the next year and no more marathon meetings discussing the safety and efficacy of the virus. He could have waited until later, but then there would have been even more push back as to why do this switch now. Of course, even with this switch now, there will probably still be marathon meetings in the school board, but the expectations for full in-person learning for the Fall of 2021 have been set.
Also, while most who are disappointed in the switch have their anger pointed at the school board members, this was a decision led by and proposed by the superintendent. As HokieGator and I were discussing, I think the outcome was already known well before this meeting. Three members were going to vote "No", no mater what, three members were going to vote "Yes" no matter what with one member being the final vote who has always sided with returning to school and I'm sure the superintendent knew this. So if anyone is mad, I think their anger should be directed at the superintendent because this is his plan.
I was telling my wife, who is a teacher, that the teachers and status quo voting school board members fought the wrong fight. They were trying to switch the decision to go back to full-time. That was already done as soon as it was announced. The fight they should have fought and they *might* have had a chance to change is the conditions that are going to be worse than what they have been previously.
