They are already in school! It's not like Henrico or Loudon who have been
100% virtual since the start of the year. They've been in school since September. This isn't sending them 'back', it's extending the day. We are virtual. Please tell me how recess for half an hour is helpful to my kids, especially if they aren't scheduled at the same time? How is having a lunch break at different times helpful? Now, my wife will have to be either fixing lunch or monitoring when they need to get back on for school while trying to take care of my other kids. We don't have a janitor to clean the house, lunch worker to make lunch, monitor for outdoor recess, resource teacher to send our kid to for half an hour. A parent has to do all of that, and now you are forcing them to do it all day.
Right now, they get all of their classroom time taken care of in a 3 hour window. They have extra work (usually Math and reading) that is done outside of the window. They can also schedule time to go play with friends in the afternoon. During a 30 minute recess, then can run down to the neighborhood playground and run back. Lot's of fun.
Moving everyone to all day was shortsighted IMO. In school moving to all-day while virtual stayed as is made much more sense to me. The most sense was leaving it as is, BUT RJHokie pointed out, if they need to use this as a trial run for next year, then move to a hybrid of all day in and half-day out. Clearly, virtual parents didn't want to change, mainly because it will be even worse for many younger students who struggle to stay engaged on a computer for 3 hours a day.
