I don't know that we can determine if pre-conceived bias was at play in the case of Mr. Brooks, but it's an unfortunate truth that young black males account for a disproportionate amount of violent crimes. Does that mean that the majority of young black males are dangerous? No, of course not. But police are most certainly aware of the statistics. Does that create some slanted interactions? Almost certainly, but I believe the vast majority of police infercations with civilians are equitable, and I don't believe this case is evidence to the contrary. I don't see any mishandling of the events leading up to Mr. Brooks making the ill-fated, split-second decision to run. If anything, Brooks' actions may represent a distrust of the justice system, fearing that if he was arrested, he would not be treated fairly in court...but that is conjecture on my part, and is a different discussion altogether.

Unfortunately I am not in the Blacksburg area, but I do appreciate your willingness to continue our conversation. In my opinion, that is how these issues can be resolved - heartfelt discussions at the personal level. Healing needs to start at the community level and work its way up, not the other way around. The media aren't going to solve our problems. In fact, in this age of ad revenue and website hits, it's probably in their financial best interest to keep stoking the flames of division. My prayer is that the American people a whole will see through that and will realize there is common ground to be found if both sides are willing to engage each other with open hearts and open minds. Perhaps I'm naive, but I'm going to keep praying for this. I fear a failure to come together is going to be the end of our country.
