I'll give that honest consideration. Yes, I'm in CLT, so face time
(the real stuff) isn't likely. I think the last time I was in Blacksburg was 10 years ago and it's not on my regular rounds.
I'll ask you to consider this: you're in a small, rural town - forget VT for the moment - and I'm in a city that has grown tenfold in population in the 36 years since I left Blacksburg to move here. Like other major metro areas, Charlotte has a lot of crime. Crimes of all kinds, committed by every demographic group you could name. In terms of homicides, read the last line of the linked report given by our police chief last year:
"The most vulnerable demographic and the most likely to commit a homicide, he said, consists of black men ages 18 to 24.
'Disproportionately, it’s impacting those who are most vulnerable,' he said. “Therein lies our frustration. '”
No outrage is ever expressed over these "routine" murders, compared to the violence of white police officers against all people of color. No businesses are destroyed. No one is fired or has to resign.
About ten days ago, the (white) owner and CEO of a local company suggested the community try work to try to solve these black-on-black homicides and he has since been ridiculed and vilified in the press. He and his wife had given nearly $2million to build a new YMCA in West Charlotte, a area populated predominantly by minorities of color. The Y gave his money back, the Panthers, Hornets, Knights, U of SC and many other public and private organizations all cancelled their long-term affiliations with his company, accusing him of insensitivity and racism. This is a man and his family who have worked tirelessly, personally to help, educate and lift the lives of those whose skills and ambitions would never otherwise have been realized.
Talk about bringing the hammers, Gadfly. Does the 400 years mantra explain any of this insane rebuke to you? Who's hiding behind the homicide statistics and why? What would Trevor Noah have to say about this?
