Do you need special trading platforms as small investor?

Or can you use something like e-trade and just work within their framework? I imagine one would need some specific tools to make it happen. As far as my experience goes, once a trade is made automatically on those consumer platforms, it doesn't go to another programmed trade, it just sits there until you log in and make the next scheduled trade.
