UConn may not have a choice in the matter
If they are not going to be a full member of the AAC, then the AAC may tell UConn to leave and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
As far as the reason for leaving the AAC, football in the AAC may not be worth the additional expenses and lack of rivalries for the other sports. Also, I would not assume that UConn is going to make less money by leaving the AAC. It looks like the AAC's new TV deal would give schools $7 million per year, "The deal reportedly gives each school an average of about $7 million a year (up from around $2 million) and puts more events on ESPN properties, further widening the financial gap between the AAC and other non-power conference peers."

Whereas, in 2013 the Big East signed a "12-year, $500M contract with Fox Sports, a “sum that will rise" to $600M if, "as expected, the league expands to 12 members,” according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES." It is worth noting that the Big East currently has 10 members (11 with UConn) which means that UConn will probably receive somewhere between $40-50 million per year in the Big East.
If you are UConn's AD, then which sounds like a better deal for your school?
AAC = $7M per year
Big East = $40-50M per year [Post edited by VTHokie2000 at 06/24/2019 3:59PM]
