Oh I agree that 16 should probably be the cap for a conference

and even that might be too large in some cases. However, I was looking at it from a purely scheduling standpoint. For example when the MAC had 13 members in football, both divisions couldn't play a round robin division schedule and still play 8 conference games. In fact the math wouldn't have worked out if the MAC decided to play 9 conference games.

Since the ACC switched to a 20 game conference schedule for basketball and the math currently works out with 15 members, it got me wondering if the math would work out if the ACC wanted to expand. At least any plans for future expansion may now depend on the math working out for both football and basketball.

As I have said before in various posts, a reason the power conferences may want to expand beyond 16 members, is because it could make things easier (politically speaking) if/when the decision is to leave the NCAA and form a new association or leave DI and form a new division level. Then once the move is complete, these super conferences could break up into smaller conferences (i.e. go from 4 conferences with 20 to 8 conferences with 10). Basically the super conference is a means to an end.
