If the G5s decide they want their own Playoff, then I could see a scenario

where the P5s decide to not play the G5s. In that same scenario, I could even see the P5s decide to scrap the bowl games in favor either an 8 team, 16 team, or even a 32 team Playoff. It is possible that in order for the G5s to make the same kind of money they currently receive playing regular season and bowl games against the P5s, the G5 Playoff may need to be 8 or even 16 teams. If the G5 Playoff starts out with either 8 or 16 teams, then that may force the hand of the P5s to make radical changes to their postseason.

You are right that the G5s don't have a shot to make the Playoffs. Something I find interesting is the inconsistency in how the P5s classify some "G5s" as a "P5." For example I think most P5 conferences consider Army and Navy to be a P5 opponent, but not Air Force. Also, I think the Big Ten considers Cincy and UConn to be a "P5" opponent, but I don't think the other power conferences share the same view. If there is a split between the P5s and G5s, then it will be interesting to see what happens to the G5s that are considered to be a "P5" opponent. Will they get a seat at the table? Will they have to join a power conference or can they be a P5 Independent? If they are allowed to be a P5 Independent, then will all 5 power conferences have to agree on who can be on that list? If each power conference can have its own list, then could we see the power conferences decide to expand their list before the split is finalized? How would the G5s react to the expanded lists? If the G5s wanted to play hardball, then it could put the schools on the list in an interesting position especially if they are not allowed to become a P5 Independent and the G5s forbid a school from playing against a P5 opponent if they want to participate in the G5 Playoff.
