or are you talking about rat traps? Paradoxically the clips in the bottom of your shoe are called clipless.

It's worth spending a few minutes in a parking lot doing loop de loops getting used them for the first time. The funny thing is I was doing that when some car pulls in, asks for directions I ride over then promptly fall into the window as I forgot about the clips ;^)

SPDs can be a little stiff at first clicking in and out of them but they will smooth out, it's a pretty easy motion, kick your heel out a little and you're out. It's pretty much 2nd nature now, even use them in spinning class. You might even want to buy a pair of mountain bike shoes - with treads that are deeper than the cleats until you get comfortable.

A former TSLer HFNSC talked me into the Look style and loved them ever since, nice wide, stable platform but they won't work with mountain bike shoes.

Clipless pedals save a lot of energy, much less give, crisper pedaling, you can pull up on the trailing foot givng you more power going up hills. Congrats on the bike, that's a beauty, Own a couple Lemonds which were built by Trek at the time.
