Wow...I just got a flashback from 13 years ago during ACC Expansion
I remember when a blow hard who I think called himself Doc Ryan, a UNC version of the Dud from WV, was vehemently against our inclusion into the ACC because we did not deliver any Q rating and that our home market of Roanoke/Lynchburg/Blacksburg was meaningless.
He of course is WRONG.
College sports, especially with schools that fly a state university flag, really carry an entire state or region, not just one particular TV market.
We all know that the Hokies are the key player not just in Roanoke but also Richmond, Hampton Roads, Washington, and Bristol/Kingsport/Johnson City.
Boston College suffers for ratings because Boston is a pro town. Period. Boston thinks of the Sox first, then the Pats, then the Celtics and Bruins...and then maybe they think a little about BC. Also remember that BC is far from State U.
That being said, BC gives the ACC a home market in Boston and all of Massachusetts. That brings high dollar subs for a network.
Ratings and markets are indeed important but quality on the field trumps market in college sports. Ask the SEC. Their largest markets are Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta. If I recall, Texas A&M is in College Station, yet Dallas is an SEC market. UGA is in Athens, which is an hour from Atlanta, yet it is the home market in Atlanta, Macon, Valdosta, and Augusta. State U...works in Texas, Georgia, and Virginia.
