Locker rooms and dorms (see UT & FSU). Keeping coaches (Texas A&M)

Tennessee has a top notch football facility and it's really really helped them.
FSU has incredible dorms for football players and more then a few Virginia HS players have pointed to dorms when choosing them over VT.
Bama has massive recruiting support staff that keeps them engaged with every top recruit in the country.

VT has recently been the coaching development program for Texas A&M. They've out paid us for our best young recruiters lately. Heck, they nearly hired Bud Foster away from us. A younger Bud Foster would have probably taken that extra money and run with it.
