That's part of it too. Longing for the days of NCAA's Thomas Hansen

From 1966 to 1981 Thomas Hansen, University of Washington Alumnus, controlled all College Football on television as the NCAA Television Program Director. ABC Sports had exclusive rights to all college football games on television. They hired Keith Jackson to be the face. There were only 3 networks.

Thomas Hansen scheduled a Big Ten game at Noon Eastern and a PAC12 game at 4:00 nationally. Everyone else from other conferences would get shown on 3-4 TV stations regionally only and only 1 or 2 times a season. That's why people have the misperception that the Big Ten and PAC12 have good football still today. The power of television. If anyone complained, Thomas Hansen would find a means to have the school sanctioned by the NCAA. Notre Dame only got on national Television playing Big Ten and PAC12, which they did. There were exceptions, but this was the general rule. Thomas Hansen created his own "Road to the Rose Bowl" basically, which is total hogwash.

Oklahoma and Georgia sued the NCAA in 1981, and this practice was ruled unconstitutional. Then the CFA was formed. Everyone joined the CFA except the Big Ten and PAC12. Sorry Charlie. Eventually individual conferences started doing their own negotiations later. Plus cable came into play.

I'd bet that the PAC12 wants the 3:30 Eastern time slot exclusively today. Not going to happen.
