I believe NCAA bylaws (or conference bylaws) mandate
that teams aren't allowed to spend the week in between games on the road. The reason I think it is a NCAA bylaw because ACC teams can't do it either. I guess it is possible that every conference decided to use the same rule. When VT played 2 NC schools on the road in back-to-back weeks, VT bused down for the first game on its normal travel day. Bused back to Blacksburg after the game. Then bused back down (on its normal travel) to play the second NC school and then bused back to Blacksburg after the game.
The irony is that the Pac-12 has worked out a very good travel schedule for basketball and the other sports. If a team is going to play 1 team from a state/region/city, then it will play the second team from that same state/region/city 2 or 3 days later before flying back home. The pairings are kinda obvious:
2 WA teams
2 OR teams
2 Bay Area teams
2 LA teams
2 AZ teams
2 Rocky Mountain teams
It is too bad football couldn't implement a similar kind of policy.
