My FiL lasted for a year and the last month was as painful as...

as anything I've ever experienced.

He was living with us and I was with him everyday until the last week...at least he knew we loved him and cared.

My sister from the time it was discovered she was terminal to the the time she passed was 5 days the last 4 in a coma. I told her the night before she slipped into a coma I loved her and she said she loved me too...I wasn't able to get back until the afternoon before she passed that night.

Neither situation is good by any stretch of the imagination but my FiL told me a couple of weeks before he passed that he was glad to have stayed with us and was able to see his grandkids and kids before he went (he knew it was a matter of time). His hope was to be there to see the birth of his great-grandson but missed it by 4 weeks.
