I get that
And I'm glad they (apple, android, etc) are trying to save us from our own stupidity where we have everything in one place- our bank accounts, our passwords, our (fill in the blank) that could be easily stolen.
But I guess I see the full legal need to law enforcement to have access to a phone. It's not like law enforcement is just going around wanting to access what's on our phones for the sake of seeing it. They're going by the legal process that we've established. If they had a tool, could they subvert that process? Absolutely. But, much like in physical evidence, I would presume evidence gathered illegally (without a warrant) would be inadmissable, so in that regard I have less concern about privacy from law enforcement. Intelligence agencies sure- that's a different beast all together.
But if we're so concerned about protecting our stuff- why do we have windows and more than one entrance to our homes? Those have made our homes more vulnerable to thieves and others of malicious intent. But we learned that our homes are vulnerable, and that we shouldn't keep the key hanging by the front door with a bag of cash in the window because somebody could break in. So we don't do those poor practices.
