There may not be any empirical data because there are other factors


(i.e. match-ups, weather conditions, etc.) which could trump it on any given day. If I was a coach, then I would rather see my team play a tough schedule because I want my team to be battle tested going into the postseason. However, I also realize that the make-up of my team will change from year to year, so some years it may not be the best thing for my team. I do agree with you that it may not matter for the elite teams. At the same time, I believe there was a couple seasons when Arizona was at its peak that they played a tough regular season schedule.
