a conference has to make hay in early season out of conference matchups. That sets a baseline for the entire conference and the subsequent in conference results generally become a self-fulfilling prophecy. In some ways a lot like the recruiting rankings where a 3 star becomes a 4 star with say an Alabama or other upper echelon offer.
