Those benefits to the university proper
are overblown around here.
You're right to follow the money, but it's the athletic departments that really feel compelled to chase the money. They can't survive in any way that looks like the present without it. The athletic money element for the "university proper" really isn't a big deal. It survives just fine without it.
Yes, fundraising is a necessary part of stewarding the university, but we raised $200 million last year...how much of that can we credit to football? how much would it matter if the university stopped playing "big boy ball"? (keeping in mind that the part that we can directly credit to football/athletics only goes to support football/athletics)
