Consider the switch as merely a break in the hot wires.


3 wires come in from the (hot) outlet - black, white, ground into the switch box. 3 wires go out from the switch box to the lights - black, white, ground,

White is tied to white, ground is tied to ground (with a pigtail also connected to the actual switch) and the 2 remaining blacks go to the switch (the switch is the "interrupter" of the hot/power to the lights) .
