For most ND fans.....
..independence IS college football, what we perceive college football is supposed to be.
(Scheduling flexibility, the ability to cut one's own TV deal, the ability to play all over the country. The ability to play games in NFL stadiums in large cities across America, an intersectional rivalry with a school in Los Angeles)
THAT is college football to ND fans, not playing 8 or 9 schools from the same conference or region every season.
(For instance, ND plays BYU in Las Vegas next season, it will play Wisconsin in Lambeau Field in a few years, it will play Navy in Dublin, Ireland again)
Up until 1990, lots of other schools thought so, too, but money and scheduling issues forced them into football conferences.
What you guys do with conferences and divisions and conference TV deals and such things is some other weird alien object. :)
Seriously though, it is a bit much to see a statement like that.
Hyberbole much?
Conference realignment is destroying college football, not ND.
The SEC and Big Ten sucking up all of the power is destroying college football, not ND's football independence.
The ACC has blood on its hands too. It destroyed the Big East.
All P5 conferences are to blame for where we are now.
The greed of conferences for more TV dollars is the catalyst for any harm to the sport.
All of the ACC's current problems are self-inflicted by the way. None are ND's doing.
ND joining the ACC in football would not "save college football", it would just hurt ND's brand, for no good purpose except to make ACC teams a little bit more money.
Hell, a lot of fans of ACC schools want out of the ACC (FSU, Clemson and others), but some people expect ND to join.
Some joke, huh?
