According to the DMV Driver's Manual, you are correct


You are correct about your interpretation of "any direction"

The statute you cite makes fairly clear the exceptions. Namely when there is a physical barrier of some sort between the road the bus is one and the road you are on, or when there is a police officer/crossing guard directing traffic otherwise
