Were you on a divided highway? The presence of a median affects the answer.

I live on a divided highway and if a bus stops, lights flashing, on the other side of the median, traffic is not required to stop. So, at the T intersection, the bus is on the side road and traffic on the side of the highway immediately adjacent to the bus' position has to stop, but traffic on the other side of the median does not.
