OK - so this just happened to me on the way to my daughter's school ...

I was approaching a 'T' intersection and I was on the main road that doesn't have to stop. There was a large (20-25) gathering of school kids getting ready to board a bus that was almost there, but not quite. There was a car in the right turn lane that was stopped and the pickup truck in front of me that was going straight also stopped. The red lights on the bus started flashing and I stopped behind the pickup truck. From the other direction there was a car in the left turn lane, also stopped and while we waited a car going straight from the other direction an also stopped.

At this point, the pickup truck in front of me slowly rolled forward and then drove away. I pulled up to his spot and stopped. A woman in a minivan behind me was throwing a major temper tantrum because I had stopped. For three minutes while the kids loaded she was screaming and throwing her arms (and two fingers - one on each hand) up every two or three seconds - thought she might have a coronary. So I wasn't 100% sure if I should be driving or not at this point but I erred on the side of caution and stayed put. Plus, I was enjoying watching her behave like a two year old that just lost her teddy bear.

So I just returned home and checked the VA DMV laws and found the passage below - the word 'any' tells me that I was likely correct. Had the bus stopped 40 feet down the intersecting road I wouldn't have stopped but it was stopped right at the stop sign for the intersection.

What say the Lizards - look forward to the backstory from the point of view of the apoplectic woman.

Drivers are required to follow certain laws when encountering a school bus. Virginia motorists must:
stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when approaching from any direction
