If the players leaving are smart, then fans will never know the real reason

a player has decided to leave the team. All fans will see is a public message thanking the coaching staff and maybe VT for the opportunity, thanking their teammates, wishing the coaching staff and/or players the best of luck, and announcing their decision (even if they were technically cut by the coaching staff).

I say that because it is always good business for a player to not burn any bridges with the prior school and coaching staff. That type of behavior could always come back to haunt them down the road.
