Well given the way the current bylaws are set up, the MAC would be
in violation of them just like they were when UMass was a football-only member. I say that because it is mathematically impossible for a division with 6 members and a division with 7 members to play a round robin division schedule and everyone plays the same number of conference games. It doesn't matter if the MAC opts to play 8, 9, or 10 conference games because the problem will still be the same; everyone playing the same number of cross-division games with respect to their division.
If you look back at some of the schedules when UMass was a football-only member, then you will see that every year some division foes didn't get to play each other so everyone in the MAC could play the same total number of conference games (8). The MAC doesn't want a repeat because I think eventually the NCAA frowned on the MAC doing that which is part of the reason the MAC gave UMass that ultimatum.
