It's a little of both. The point starts with the players at the baseline


and the serve and return are more similar to ground stokes in tennis but the object is to work your way closer to the net and volley. With all the players nearer the net you don't have the time for a full stroke so it becomes a little more more a racquetball swing but not exactly ... cause in racquetball you can use the wrist to put everything you have into the shot; there is no fear of hitting it long (as in tennis, pickleball and table tennis). I think the volleying is more like ping pong; short arm strokes with wrist action added for placement and finesse.
