Stopped to watch a pickleball group and ended up joining an outdoor club in
the Richmond area. I would say the makeup is 50% retired, 35% 40's & 50's, 10% 20's & 30's and 5% younger. I have played maybe 4-5 months but is seems as if a few more 20's and 30's are coming out now.
I enjoy racket sports and am also a social athlete so it is right up my ally.
I view is at a cross between tennis and table tennis (ping pong); It requires more movement and racket force than table tennis but not as much as tennis. Any age player with good racket finesse can do well.
The best thing about it is that the club plays 9-noon and 5-8 pm everyday ... so if you can find any room in your schedule you can show up and play. There's always people there and they do rotation play so you will be on the court in minutes after a group ends its game.
My wife and I were hitting the tennis ball around one Saturday morning and decided to go watch this new sport. The person in charge came over and asked if we wanted to give it a try. She and another long-time club member showed us the basics and played a couple games with us and we were on our way. Nice people. Good active fun. Highly recommend giving it a try.
