Cunningham's idea will make things worse

Those two open slots will be two SEC teams every year.

Should be five slots to the top five conference champions, including the independent "champ". Then the three remaining slots can be to anyone else, limit one per conference, or one more independent.

The number 1 and number 2 teams will get in every year. ND will get in a lot. The SEC, B1G, and ACC will get that second team in a lot, in that order, IMO. The PAC and Big 12 will get at least one in almost every year. Even the AAC will get a team in often (unless they get raided by the Big 12).

I'd prefer a 10 team playoff (with two play-in games), but 8 can work better than the current 4 team model.
