What's this?

ND thinks joining a conference will do three things:

1) Hurt recruiting by limiting national exposure/national schedule/playing games in all areas.

2) Diminish the brand ND has built up over a century as an independent

3) Cause ND fan uproar/revolt and possible loss of millions of dollars in donor money.

(Neither Jack Swarbrick nor any future ND AD wants to be the Vidkun Quisling regarding ND's independence)

So, all of these possible disadvantages people list as an independent are merely seen as the cost of doing business by ND.

That includes things like having to go undefeated to make the playoffs, make less TV money or any number of things.

Also, a lot of ND people just don't trust conferences and don't think that they will have ND's best interests at heart.

There is a multi-generational "scar" at ND caused by the actions of Michigan and the Big Ten a century ago by rejecting, then blackballing ND in an attempt to smother the program.

That, and Rockne's counterattack by barnstorming all over the country as an independent, is ND football's "origin story".

I keep telling people that history matters.

ND strongly believes that the football program can best market the school nationally and internationally as an independent and as free from the control of a conference as possible.

If that is considered as merely "independence for independence sake", then so be it.

A lot of ND people think that joining a football conference would be a significant negative event for ND football.
