A potential issue I see with the promotion/relegation concept


is the impact it would have on scheduling. For example, let's assume that VT is placed in the following group: VT, WVU, UVA, L'ville, UMass, Temple, Marshall, Clemson, Charlotte, Georgia, and Buffalo. Let's assume that VT's schedule for this season looked like this:

Home Games: UMass, Temple, Marshall, Charlotte, and Buffalo
Away Games: WVU, UVA, L'ville, Clemson, and Georgia

I don't know about most people, but I would be upset as a season ticket holder with not having the opportunity to see WVU, UVA, L'ville, Clemson, and Georgia play at Lane Stadium before VT was promoted or relegated at the end of the season.

I would think if college football was to adopt a promotion/relegation system, then it would either have to be done over 2 seasons (if a team plays each other team only 1 time) or both home and away games played in the same season like what you currently see in the various pro soccer leagues. It would be the only fair thing to do to ensure every team ends up with the same schedule so no team ends up with either a more or less favorable home or away schedule in a given season.
