qualification comes instantly to mind, "past performance may not be indicative of future results." I do not believe money was nearly as high on the criteria as access. ND always had the TV contract and well oiled fundraising machine. What they cannot manufacture on their own is competition and championship access. Money could and probably did hinder recruiting which in turn had some effect on competition and championship access. They survived and revived last time. This time may be different depending on NIL, CFP and how the conference deals shake out. My belief is that ND highly values their independence and the only thing that surpasses that is if the landscape were to restrict their championship access and/or relegate them to a competitive level below the top tier.
