The modern athlete and bowl structure.


He takes neither into consideration.

Many (not all) players are looking to showcase their talent for the next level to get paid. Once they've done that, they don't want to get hurt in a meaningless bowl.

Plus, there are many more bowls than there were 30 years ago (18 bowls in 1989, 40 bowl games in 2019). This, by volume, devalues bowls. Even the "New Years Six" is a bit of a fraud. One of the cool things about the past major bowls before the BCS-CFP is that during the season, would-be champions were working toward a specific bowl. And every major bowl had the potential in a given year to be one on the big games that might go to determine the national champ. Sometimes three games on NYD would have an impact on the championship. Today, we know long before the season opener which bowls will be part of the CFP and which are glorified exhibition games.

This ain't your father's Rose Bowl, unfortunately.
