We have a gas water heater which I set just one notch above the middle...


setting in the winter, reduce to the middle setting in summer. Water temperature doesn't change much in the ground in the winter, but it does drop by about 1 deg C. I figure when the colder water blends with the hot in the shower, the net effect is running out of hot water faster. So, the hotter, the better when starting.

I gave you a +1 for proper use of "water heater" instead of "hot water heater".
