Dog harnesses/collars to prevent pulling?

So Charley was a pretty good on a leash for a while, but not so much any more. We've been lazy about walking her properly and my son who is now her primary caretaker during the day has not followed through with our efforts to really get and keep her walking well. I've used a traditional choke chain in the past with other dogs with very good results. The choke chain is not working with Charley. Partly due to her anatomy and partly due to her behavior the chain won't stay in a position that prevents her pulling. Last couple of walks have been pretty bad, and I feel like she's hurting herself from pulling so much. I see "no pull" harnesses in the pet store. Those things any good? What have you had success with?
