Perfectly acceptable to ask the higher paying job what their timeframe is.

If you get an offer from the lower paying job, feel free to tell the higher paying company that you have another opportunity you're considering. When you do this, be sure to point out how interested you are in the higher paying company, and remind them why you'd do a great job for them.
