I really don't want to be a traffic-clogging bicyclist but boredom is

getting the better of me. So, before I buy a bunch of tight fitting clothes and plot all my routes on narrow, two-lane roads with no bike lanes, I have a bike question: I have a 26 year old Gary Fischer bike that needs just about everything replaced. The frame is great, the gears shift smoothly but it need tires, wheels, brakes, certainly cables and the seat is even ripped. Is it better to get all that done or take the anticipated $50 trade-in and buy a newer bike (hybrid type so I can ride on the road and also on trails?)
