This NY Time article (via yahoo news) actually provides a few good notes
comparing the two. unfortunately alot of it is saying the sample size for coronavirus is too small, relatively speaking, and the information is too incomplete to have a clear sense of how it compares to the flu. Here are a couple of notes:
The seasonal flu kills about 0.1% of people who become infected. Early estimates of the coronavirus death rate from Wuhan, China is around 2%, down to roughly 1.4% if more parts of China are considered. This number could skew even lower with mild symptom-free cases that have not been detected (though my guess is the same is true for seasonal flu).
The coronavirus DOES seem to be more contagious with estimates that one person with the virus appears to infect 2.2 other people on average, vs. 1.3 for the seasonal flu. Of course, that number is skewed by early mismanagement of the virus. People in both cases may also be contagious before symptoms appear making this data hard to establish.
Other tidbits:
- the seasonal flu seems to have more of a negative impact on young children than the coronavirus.
- with the coronavirus, the death rate for older men is notably higher than older women, perhaps due to the fact that chinese men typically smoke more than man (compromised lung function).
