For the longest time Davidison participated in DIII football (member of the ODAC) and DI for all other sports because they didn't want to offer athletic scholarships in football. Then in 1991 the NCAA DI decided schools could no longer do that because it gave the DI schools an unfair competitive advantage. Maybe not always on the grid iron, but in terms of the facilities they can provide recruits. Hence why the bylaws were changed so schools were forced to compete at the DI level in football and basketball in order to remain a DI member. It also led to formation of the Pioneer Football League (PFL) conference in DI-FCS. As of today, the Ivy League and PFL are the only DI conferences to not offer athletic scholarships in football.
