All the articles I read during that time period

(When the WAC expanded to 16 and when the MWC formed 2 years later) didn't identify 1 main issue. Instead, it identified 3 main issues; financial, geographic, and structural issues.

The financial piece is an apples to oranges comparison because it was a different era back then. There were no conference networks or large dollar media contracts. Whereas, the geographic and structural issues are still relevant to today. It is unclear if the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC have all addressed the geographic issue properly or not. As for the structural issue, it remains to be seen whether a conference can address that or not. Can a conference create 4 pods/quads that appease the majority of the school personnel and their fans while protecting as many of the "important" rivalries defined by each school? For the 2 quads/pods that rotate every 2 years, will majority of the school personnel and fans embrace switching divisions or not?

If a conference is not able to do that, then it may find itself in the same boat as the WAC. At least the part where enough schools break away to form their own conference (i.e. 1 conference with 16 suddenly becomes 2 conferences with 8+).
